February 2, 1956: Chinese Zodiac

February 2, 1956 was within the Chinese year of the goat (?).
This year started on January 24, 1955 and ended on February 11, 1956.
The associated element is the Yin Wood.

1956 was a bisect or leap year, so there were 366 days in this year. If a year is divisible by 4 and by 100, but not divisible by 400, then it is not a leap year.

Dwight D. Eisenhower was President. Don't Go Near the Water (William Brinkle), The Last Hurrah (Edwin O'Connor), Peyton Place (Grace Metalious), and Auntie Mame (Patrick Dennis) were the popular books of the day. The Conquerors starring John Wayne, The Lady Killers with Alec Guinness, Carousel with Gordon McRae and Shirley Jones (one of my all time favorite *old* movies, LOL), and Invasion of the Body Snatchers with Kevin McCarthy were playing at the movie theaters.

I've often been unhappy with my birthday. February can be such a dismal month, it's smack in the middle of winter where many places are either expecting a great deal of snow or have already received more than enough. Even while living in Arizona where there is always more sun than cloudy skies, February can be dreary. It is much too close to the Christmas holidays to consider doing anything extravagant as far as a party goes. Besides, who has the energy to either plan or execute a party after the energy spent over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays?

And PLEASE don't get me started on Puxatawney Phil and that dratted shadow. Yes, I know on February 2nd there really IS six more weeks of winter. But just once I'd like for that poor little guy to be left alone and let him SLEEP! That's what they are supposed to do, ya know. Hibernate, sleep, burrow, it's winter for shit's sake!

Then, I've been scratching my dang head cause I'm not sure if it's always been this way or if I'm just now realizing that heaven forbid anything actually take place on the weekend before February 2nd ... the fecking Super Bowl is on and NO ONE in their right mind is gonna give up watching a bunch of crazy men chase a ball just to come to a birthday party. So, even though *technically* the day of my birth falls on February 2nd, I rarely celebrate until sometime in the spring, like late March or early April. No football, no snow, warmer temps and more importantly everyone finally has recuperated from the overindulgence of the holidays and are actually looking forward to something to celebrate and feel good about.

But hey, February 2nd is my birthday, it's the only one I get and even if I am too damn tired to get very excited about it, I will be celebrating a bit in my own way. It's supposed to rain here in NC, but I'm gonna be all snug in my comfies and at the end of the day will thoroughly enjoy cracking open a bottle of Black River red from Duplin Winery and soaking in a candle lit lavender bath ...

Happy Birthday to me!
