Social Media Silence

For the past few months once a week on any given random day, I make it a point to stay away from all my social media accounts. That means no Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest ...nothing. I do check email and I also keep text messages and Facebook messenger open simply because I have family and friends that use those formats for communication.

At first, I was worried I wouldn't be able to stay away from my addiction. I mean, come on! I'm always watching the news tickers and reading up on a lot of different subjects. I'm also pretty snarky when I find something online that just makes my teeth itch. But, honestly? The first day was easier than I thought and now, I actually look forward to the time I spend away from social media. Yes, I could just shut it down and walk away completely ... but the fact is I don't want to. I want to know what's going on in the world and whether you want to admit it or not, Facebook has become an element for finding out about things.

I live in a small town, our newspaper is mostly local or county coverage. Yes, I "could" subscribe to the more mainstream papers, but I can read most of them for free online. And often times, one of the people on my Facebook friends' list will post an article from the area where they live and I'd never know about something that they consider important. At any rate, I'm not ready to completely give up on social media just yet.

However, on the days I'm away from the computer, I find all sorts of things to get into here at home. Yesterday, I dug out some of the old journals and planners I have either started and not finished or simply forgotten I had them until we move this last time and I found them in a box. I spent most of the day tearing some of them apart and then using the pages I deemed worthy, began reconstructing my version of a Traveler's Notebook. This is a work in progress and I didn't get as far along as I wanted before I needed to clean things up and get the Little Witch off the bus after school. I ended up gluing some pages and waiting for the glue to dry is not one of my favorite things to do. Yes, I am impatient, we all know that!

Once I get things together as I want and I put them in the actual cover (mine is about 4.75 wide by 8.25 tall), I'll have 5 small notebooks held in place by elastic bands and will have a place for washi tape, a 6-inch ruler, some clips and a few pens. I also took one of those notepads you find at the dollar store that hangs on the refrigerator via a magnet, removed the magnet and then using rubber cement, I glued it to the back inner cover so I have a designated place to jot down a quick note or keep my shopping list from disappearing before grocery day.

Each individual notebook has 20 sheets of paper sewn together and folded to give 40 pages and covered in cardstock. Some of the inner pages of the ones I have had already been written on but there were more blank pages than used, so I trimmed some other paper I had and then glued that over the used sheets. I also redid the cover on a couple of the smaller notebooks to cover up the wear and tear and scribbles from their previous life.

I'm actually quite excited for the finished project. My version of a Traveler's Notebook will hold everything I think is necessary for my daily life and still fit into my purse without adding too much extra weight.

  1. I've been off FB and every other social media out there for days now and I don't miss it at all. I thought being off Pinterest would literally kill me but I was so wrong. I've been drawing, reading, baking, walking when the weather is good, and getting a head start on the spring cleaning when I have the energy. I thought I would go crazy not being on the internet but I was so wrong. The only time I am on the internet or social media is when I'm in pain and I'm bored.

  2. It's not so much that I miss the actual social media, but I do miss the people I interact with on a daily basis. I HATE talking on the phone so keeping in contact via Facebook or Twitter works for me.

BTW, I noticed you've been quiet. Hope all is well with you! <3
